Its no longer Employees, its service providers
Gone are the days when employees would be terminated unexpectedly. In those days, an employee was like a son/daughter in a home. They would bank on the father's (the boss') parental love as security. Until the 'father's' world changed pushing them to layoff the unsuspecting sons and daughters.
Today, no one will tell you that you operate as a service provider to the organization. My study of workplaces for the last two years has provided me with proof of this. So, there is no way you can be ignorant of the economy and how it is doing. The client (the boss in this scenario) operates in that economy. You have to anticipate the security of your work/earning source by observing your client's priorities. They will show you if something is changing in your boss' world.
Find out where they put most of their money, what takes most of their time and what they spend their energy on. If you are not in any of the three, make your decision.
There is no way you can be ignorant about who else is a client to your skills, knowledge and experience. We are operating in a gig economy or short term contractual work. A secure job isn't popular these day may be in public service. With an economy where the service industry contributes 51% to its GDP, this should inform you of the direction of the money. All you need is lessen another person's troubles at a fee using your skills. Serve them. He who likes to serve will never be out of work.
Dear employee, you are in charge of your job. The government used to be. It set up laws. Until contracts showed up. If someone cannot get rid of you, they will wait at the end of your contract. You don't have to wait for destiny to happen to you. You have to rise, take charge of that destiny and change it if you want. The father figure boss has died with the unquencheable pursuit of wealth and increase in individualism.
If the workplace was a home, the 21st century is that year when the parent pushes their son out of the house to go face the harsh world without protecting him any more. It is that time for the employee.
Yesterday, I was talking with a friend who was contemplating leaving a boss who wanted him to stay. Of recent I meet these kinds of scenarios a lot or get talking with people trying to understand their workplaces or boss.
Well, his boss' workstyle was not his workstyle. As we ended the discussion, together we had diagnosed his workplace and he made a decision. What made me happier is he was at peace with his decision. He was incharge again. This is the power that the employee feels they don't have. The power to decide. I want to tell you that you do and don't wait for anyone to give you permission.
